How much should you tip a DJ?

There's no official rate. There is some common sense and, with WeSound, a minimum set by each DJ.

At a backyard party in Mexico City, a woman cries with joy hugging her friend, who shows her the dedication for her song on the phone.

How much do you tip a DJ?

There's no set amount: it depends on the venue, the party and what you ask for. With WeSound, each DJ sets a minimum tip per event and you choose from four levels based on that minimum; you pay exactly the level you pick, and only if the DJ accepts your request.

Is there a standard tip for a DJ?

No. There's no rule or percentage accepted everywhere, so be wary of anyone quoting an exact figure as if there were. Customs change from country to country and from one kind of party to another.

What you can do is think about two things: where you are, and how much effort your song asks of the DJ.

What should your tip depend on?

Guidelines to help you, not rules. In the end it's your way of saying thanks.

FactorWhy it counts
The settingA local bar isn't a club, a festival or a wedding. Look at what's normal in that setting.
What you ask forA song that already fits what's playing costs the DJ little. One that forces a change of pace on the floor asks more.
The dedicationIf the song is for someone at a special moment, like a birthday, it makes sense for the tip to reflect it.
The timingRequesting at peak time, with a packed floor, isn't the same as requesting early in the night.
The DJ's minimumWith WeSound, the DJ has already set a minimum tip for that event. That's your starting point.

How do WeSound's tip levels work?

WeSound is an app and website to request songs from a live DJ and support them with a tip. When you request, you pick one of these four levels, based on the minimum tip the DJ sets for the event.

LevelRelative to the DJ's minimumExample with a €4 minimum
A little thanksx1€4
Good tipx1.5€6
Big tipx2.5€10
Legendx4€16

Example amounts. If the event sets no minimum, the base is €4 and these are the levels. If the DJ sets a different minimum, the levels scale with it.

What exactly do I pay?

Exactly the level you choose, with no extra fees. You pay with Apple Pay, Google Pay or card, and the tip is held on your card until the DJ accepts the request. If they decline or time runs out, the hold is released and you pay nothing.

From each accepted tip, WeSound keeps a 15% fee and the rest goes to the DJ. That fee isn't added to what you pay.

FAQ about how much to tip

Does a bigger tip guarantee my song plays?

No. The DJ decides what plays in their set. The tip is a way to say thanks; if they don't accept your request, you're not charged.

Can I enter an amount that isn't one of the levels?

On WeSound you pick one of the four levels the app works out from the DJ's minimum.

Who sets the minimum?

The DJ, for each event. They can set a different minimum at a wedding than at a club.

What if the song is accepted but doesn't play?

Let us know in the app. We'll look into it and, if you're right, we'll refund you.
