How do I request songs without bothering the DJ?

Requesting a song is fine. What bothers DJs is how and when people ask.

Updated

From the dance floor, a woman holds up her phone with her song on "Now playing" and the DJ points at her, smiling, from the booth.

How do you request a song from a DJ without being annoying?

Ask for something that fits what's playing, ask once in one sentence, and take no for an answer. If the DJ has a WeSound QR code, request from your phone: the request arrives in writing and they look at it when it suits them, without you interrupting the mix.

Why do some DJs dislike requests?

It's rarely the request itself, it's the timing. While playing, the DJ has their hands on the gear, headphones on and their mind on the next track. Someone leaning into the booth to shout a title pulls them out of the mix.

The DJ is also reading the room: what's working, what drops the energy, where to take the night. A request that doesn't fit makes them choose between pleasing you and keeping the floor dancing.

What should you do and avoid when requesting a song?

DoAvoid
Ask for something that fits the night's style.Asking for a completely different genre at peak time.
Say the title and artist, in one sentence.Humming the song or describing it in detail.
Approach between songs, without stepping into the booth.Touching the gear, leaning on the decks or putting your drink on them.
Ask once and wait.Coming back every five minutes to ask when it's on.
Take a no gracefully.Insisting, arguing or demanding it “right now”.
Check whether the DJ has a QR code for requests.Asking for their phone number to send them the song.

Why does requesting from your phone avoid interrupting the DJ?

WeSound is an app and website to request songs from a live DJ and support them with a tip. You scan the DJ's QR code, search for the song by title or artist and send it from your phone's browser, with no app or account.

The DJ gets the exact song in writing, with your dedication if you added one. They don't have to take their headphones off or guess what you said. They look at it when it suits them and accept or decline with one tap.

The request comes with a tip that's held on your card and only charged if the DJ accepts. If it doesn't fit their set, they decline and you pay nothing: nobody has an awkward moment at the booth.

How do I request a song politely, step by step?

  1. Listen for a while first

Get a feel for the style and energy of the set so you ask for something that could fit.

  2. Look for the DJ's QR code

If it's on display, scan it with your phone's camera. If not, wait for the end of a song before you approach.

  3. Request a song, not a list

On WeSound there's a limit on active requests at a time with the same DJ. Pick the one that matters most to you.

  4. Add a short dedication if it makes sense

A birthday or a farewell helps the DJ understand why that song. We check every dedication before it reaches the booth.

  5. Let the DJ decide

With the app, or by email if you give it, you'll know if the DJ accepts. If they decline, try another one later.
